How to Write a Knockout Poem: Master Class with BOA's Sean Thomas Dougherty

Hot on the heels of BOA Edition's October Writing Exercises event, our inaugural master class in poetry and prose with BOA author Christopher Kennedy and esteemed visiting writer Gary Lutz, we are delighted to announce the second installment of Writing Exercises with BOA's own Sean Thomas Dougherty! BOA's Writing Exercises workshops are held at Rochester's Midtown Athletic Club and offer participants the chance to work closely with BOA authors to exercise their creative muscles and learn new techniques to create their own work. Each event features a workshop, reading and lunch. Drawing on the event's setting, Sean's upcoming workshop - "How to Write a Knockout Poem" - will focus on crafting works inspired by sport and athleticism. Are you an athlete? Do you work out, play sports, watch sports, or have idols who are sports heroes? Want to sing them? Poem them? Then this is the workshop for you! Since ancient times poets have been enamored with athletes, from ancient Persian odes to charioteers to contemporary poems praising Magic Johnson and Muhammed Ali, poets have lifted athletes to the stars with words. Sean Thomas Dougherty, acclaimed poet and performer, has written about boxers, basketball and billiards. In this workshop, Sean will lead you through a series of exercises to write your own ode to your favorite athletic idol, exploring the specific vocabulary of your choosen sport and how to translate that into your own powerful story and imagery. "How to Write a Knockout Poem" will be held on Saturday, January 29 from 10AM to 12PM Please join us! Cost is $50 and includes lunch. For sign-up, call Midtown Athletic Club 585.461.2300.
