About this poem

"'Cry of the Loon' is an elegy to my grandfather, Roald Carlson, who passed away in 2015. He was a water man, a lover of oceans and lakes. He grew up as a missionary kid on the beaches of Madagascar, captained a ship during World War II, and drove his fishing boat around Kabekona Lake in the summer. One of my favorite memories of him was going down to the dock to hear loons call in the evening. He would ball up his fist to make a flute with his hands. The loons would call out. He would call back. As a kid, this seemed like magic, like a secret language only he and the loons understood. When he passed away, I knew I wanted to make something to remember his spirit, to share a little bit of that magic." —Kai Carlson-Wee
