My Last Day as a Boa Intern by Izzie Gowman

Coming into my internship experience at Boa Editions as a business student with no prior experience in publishing, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But over the course of my time here, I learned not only about the industry, but about the work and care that goes into running a non-profit arts organization. Every day brought something new to learn; whether it was helping log prize submissions for upcoming collections or understanding the behind-the-scenes operations that keep this independent press moving forward. The office itself quickly became one of my favorite places, with the sound of the heat clinking on and off in the background, artists and creatives talking throughout the Anderson Arts Building, and the chance to step outside and walk around NOTA during breaks, which all made the experience so inspiring. I’ve always understood the importance of art and creative expression, but being surrounded by poetry every day gave me a deeper understanding of how language can connect people.

What I’ll remember most though are the people (and dogs!) who made this experience so welcoming and unintimidating. The office dachshund’s Figgy and Lilou always brightened my day and provided just the right amount of distraction. I’m especially grateful to Peter, Justine, and Callie for sharing their experiences with me and helping me learn so much about publishing, non-profits, and creative work. Their guidance has made this experience incredibly meaningful, and I’m leaving with a much deeper appreciation for the literary community and the work that supports it.

Izzie Gowman is an intern at both Boa Editions and Figgy Studio & Shop, as well as a student at Golisano Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship.
