From City Lights poetry reading this past April, and the podcast is now available and ready for your ears! Litany for the City was selected as the winner of the 10th annual A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize from over 600 manuscripts by Hirshfield herself, who has written six previous collections of poetry and has been celebrated by the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations, the Academy of American Poets, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The podcast focuses on Teitman's work in addition to Hirshfield's Come, Thief (Knopf), and Rosenthal's The Local World (Kent State University Press). City Lights' selection and presentation of Teitman's work alongside that of Hirshfield clearly reflects Litany for the City's progression and development as a text, such that Teitman now flourishes alongside the very artist who had chosen his work in the past. Hirshfield writes that Teitman's manuscript was "the work of real exploration... This book carries both startling and imaginative freedoms and the impulsion of a person navigating the terrain of his life by means of the star-chart and sextant of poems." For Hirshfield, Teitman's poetic ventures clearly set him apart in a sea of writers, and Litany for the City will surely continue to influence other readers and poets alike in the future.
